In 1988, Ulay and Abramovic decided to end their relationship and to mark this with a performance, which became the legendary endpoint of their collaboration. After years of negotiations with the Chinese authorities, the artists got the permission to carry out 'The Lovers: The Great Wall Walk', in which they started to walk from different ends of the Chinese Wall in order to meet in the middle and say good-bye to each other. Abramovic started walking at the eastern end of the Wall, at Shan Hai Guan, on the shores of the Yellow Sea, Gulf of Bohai, walking westward. Ulay started at the western end of the Wall, at Jaiyuguan, the south-western periphery of the Gobi Desert, walking eastward. After they both continuously walked for 90 says, they met at Er Lang Shn, in Shen Mu, Shaanxi province. Here, they embraced each other to go on with their life and work separately from then on. As their work had often employed ritualized actions, mythology and Eastern thought, 'The Lovers: The Great Wall Walk' has to be considered the perfect end of the common oeuvre - also due to the Wall's mythological and philosophical connotations. LESZEK WOSIEWICZ 　　Born in 1947 in Radomysl Wielkopolski. He graduated from the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and the Lodz Film School. Director and a screenwriter. He wrote several adaptation of foreign classical literature for the screen and the stage. He was a faculty member at the Silesian University in Katowice and a co-founder of the Karol Irzykowski Film Studio. He also directed several documentaries. He won numerous awards such as: The Chief of Cinematography Award (1986), the Grand Prix at the Oberhausen Short Film Festival (1987), the Second Prize at the "Young Polish Cinema" Gdansk Film Review (1988). 　　He studied psychology at the University of Cracow (1975) and direction at PWSFTViT in Lodz (1979). He works at the Silesian University in Katowice, and also directs for the stage and adapts world classics. He won major prizes for his documentaries, The Case of Herman Stoker (Przypadek Hermana Palacza, 1986) and Breaking the Silence (Przelamujac cisze, 2002). He made the feature films The Taste of Water (Smak wody, 1980) and Christmas Eve '81 (Wigilija 81,1982), and for Kornblumenblau (1988), an incredible story of concentration camp survival, he won the Andrzej Munk Prize, the prize for direction in Gdynia, and Best Debut in Koszalin.
